These bits of fabric and ribbons are part of an exhibition entitled, “Threads of Feeling”, displayed in the Foundling Museum in London . Many infants were abandoned in the streets in 18th century London but some of the children and mothers were given shelter and aid by the Foundling Hospital. The textile tokens were part of a cataloging system to identify the child and offer a way for the parent to recognize their child should they want to reclaim them at a later date.
View the online slide show when you have the time. The bits of fabric and calligraphy are amazing. Only wish I was in London to have viewed the entire collection.
